Former US Senator Alfonse Marcello tested positive for COVID-19 and was hospitalized, his office said Friday.
Damart, 83, tested positive a week ago and soon self-quarantined at his home in Long Island, his office said in a statement.
“His recovery wasn’t as quick as he expected, so with great care he was admitted to a local hospital where he continued to be treated for the virus and stayed healthy,” the statement said.
Republican Damart was a long-time US Senator and major politician on Long Island. He served in the US Senate from 1981 to 1999 and is also a former director of the town of Hempstead. He was very famous for always paying attention to and trying to meet the needs of local members, and was called the “senator’s kettle.”
