According to Suffolk police, a woman in Selden lost control of her car on the Long Island highway on Monday morning and was killed in Hauppauge after hitting a tree.
In a statement, police said Michelle Carpenter, 35, was driving the 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix west near Exit 53 on the Long Island Highway at around 8:15 am. According to police, the sedan hit a tree and turned over in a forest area away from the shoulders.
Carpenter was taken to Bayshore’s Southside Hospital, where he was sentenced to death, police said. A 4-year-old boy in the back seat was taken to the Good Sumaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment of minor injuries.
Efforts to contact Carpenter’s family on Monday were unsuccessful.
Police resumed LIE shortly after noon after a single-vehicle collision that had to close the westbound road for almost four hours, officials said.
According to Suffolk police, the accident occurred west of Exit 55 of the Motor Parkway.
The vehicle was confiscated for safety checks. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the 4th Squad at 631-854-8452.
