State opens vaccine center in Jones Beach to meet demand

The Jones Beach Drive-Through COVID-19 Vaccination Center began booking reservations on Monday afternoon as state and local authorities announced more locations on Long Island.

The site that was scheduled to go live on Thursday was scheduled to open After a flood of newly qualified New Yorkers in pharmacies and hospitals calling for reservations.. Many vaccination centers are still in place and no doses are available yet.

State officials are encouraging people to use Jones Beach rather than small areas that have not yet been vaccinated and are not equipped to handle such a large number, such as local pharmacies. They said the state received only about 300,000 doses a day from the federal government.

Under state guidelines, the latest priority group, including first responders, teachers, and people over the age of 75, was vaccinated on Monday.

Jones Beach Center will be open daily for the next few weeks, according to state officials.

Suffolk County has a vaccine distribution site on the campus of Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood and a police academy. Law enforcement agencies will be able to get the vaccine at the Academy starting this week. However, the site was not vaccinated on Monday and Tuesday.

The SUNY Stony Brook drive-in vaccination center is set to open next week, according to state officials.
