Suffolk School Notebook: Winner of Business Competition

Thirty-one students from Long Island won a contest that challenged them to demonstrate their business skills and knowledge.

The Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s 18th Annual Emerging Leaders Contest attracted approximately 265 students from 16 high schools in Long Island. The contest, sponsored by St. Joseph College, was virtually held this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants presented volunteer judges with solutions to business-related topics in 17 categories, from sports marketing to entrepreneurship and public relations.

“Because most extracurricular activities were canceled in 2020, the tournament gave high school students the opportunity to compete with the new school they attended for the first time, otherwise giving students a normal feeling in unusual years.” The Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce said. This year, the Chamber of Commerce also selected two seniors to receive a $ 250 scholarship based on their participation in previous competitions. The winners are Gurvir Singh at Helix High School and Jamie Saturno at Northport High School.

Recently, a total of 106 seniors from 53 high schools received the Suffolk Zone Award from the New York State Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Association. Each high school nominates one female and one male recipient based on scholarship, leadership, and physical performance.
